As a result of an Amtrak train derailment blocking one of the East River tunnels, the LIRR will run reduced AM rush hour service on Monday, May 9th. Some trains will be canceled and others will be diverted to other terminals. AMTRAK DERAILMENT CAUSES SERVICE REDUCTIONS FOR LIRR MONDAY MORNING

MTA Long Island Rail Road will operate a significantly reduced AM Rush schedule Monday, May 9th with numerous Westbound AM Rush trains canceled or diverted due to an Amtrak derailment in one of the East River tunnels on Sunday.

Customers should allow extra travel time. There also is a potential for disruptions in the PM rush.

Both LIRR and Metro-North crews are assisting Amtrak to re-rail the locomotive and four coaches that derailed. Once the equipment is clear, repairs will be made to third rail, running rail and overhead catenary wires that were damaged by the derailment.

Customers are urged to check on LIRR service before heading to train stations by monitoring this website, listening to the latest news broadcasts and traffic reports and/or signing up for free E-Alerts that provide the latest train information direct from the LIRR train operations center.

For the latest information on train service, customers can also contact the LIRR's Travel Information Center at 718-217-5477 (718-217-LIRR). If you are deaf or hard of hearing, use your preferred relay service provider or the free 711 relay to reach LIRR at 718-217-5477.
