I came upon this article from 1889 in my old hometown newspaper and thought the members of AU may get a kick out of it:

Dec. 26, 1889

Last Thursday afternoon after the train pulled out of Getzville, going east on the Peanut railroad, a connecting link broke. It was first noticed by Mr. Jacob Stephan and Mr. Louis Phillips, passengers. Mr. Stephan jumped on the platform of the car ahead with Mr. Phillips remaining on the one uncoupled. Quickly grasping hands and holding on to the railing with the other, they kept the cars together, enabling the brakeman to put in a new link without stopping the train.

WOW! Those were Strong dudes!!!

Of course this story does sound like a slight ( read Huge!) Exaggaration! Newspapers were known to make stuff up back then, sort of like Fox News does today!

Also bear in mind that the cars in question would have been made of wood, not steel...not to mention that if this was done quickly, the proper analogy might well be pushing a car while in neutral.
