Those weird train numbers usually happen when the time changes which would have been the case here.
 
Another thing causing delays is the sudden freight traffic increase due to the backlog of intermodals to / from the west coast.
Once that logjam breaks, you can bet that the floodgates will be opened!

Last I read (in the Wall Street Journal) - there are a record number of container ships waiting to offload once the port authority and the unions get their contract issues resolved (lockout ended).

If they get too carried away I can see some enterprising loaders trying to triple-stack for the open western routes (all nighttime routes only though).

Craziness happening right now on #3 at Lawrence, KS. Looks like they are evacuating the train for some reason!
 
#4 is also stopped at Garden City, KS. Dispatcher said there was a "situation" and asked #3 conductor to call him on the phone. Guess we have a derailment somewhere between Lawrence and Garden City. Watching coach passengers detraining at Lawrence as I type.
 
So.. not a derailment? They are searching the train for "anything unusual"
 
If you *can't* be 8 hours - more or less - late anywhere, Amtrak is not the way to travel.
QFT. Unless you're a student, retired, unemployed, or transporting drugs you really have no business riding Amtrak. If you wanted to be on time you'd be on a plane or in a car or on a bus or riding a horse or bicycle or walking. So stop complaining already. It's not as though a dozen other countries with smaller economies have faster and more dependable trains than we do.

I was on the SWC when that freight train derailed in front of us. We were delayed about 8 hours or so.

A posting on Kalmbach Publishing Co's Trains Magazine site says #3 left Lawrence 4:08 a.m.; left Topeka 4:43 a.m.

Four hours & fourteen min. late.

Temporary evacuation of the train suggests the possibility of a bomb scare or something of that nature. It seems that these things are invariably false alarms, but they have to be taken seriously.

I was on #4 when they had us detain last night. It was a bomb threat. We detained in Garden CitY and we're back on the train in, I think, 3 or so hours? I kind of lost track of time because of the time change from mountain to central.
 
Yep. Evacuation of a perfectly serviceable train, plus police involvement = probable bomb threat.

In my heart I know it's not my fault, but I really feel bad that your first trip became so.................(uh, what's the best word?)..............interesting.

This is like hitting a trifecta.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy what's left of your trip as you progress homeward.

Last Weds/Thursday 2 hours late at Flagstaff, Friday 4 hours late at KCY. Makes things a little difficult but built in enough padding into our schedule due to advice here.
 
#4 looks to be a little tardy today. Myself, family and friends are going to be using #3 & #4 on various trips in the up coming weeks, here's to hoping for more consistent schedule keeping.
 
The only way Amtrak is going to get it together is to reroute to 100% transcon and have locomotivies that don't break down.
