Tell Ad Council: Death by train is real The UTU is working with others in transportation labor to get an offensive television advertisement pulled from broadcast.
The commercial, produced and distributed by the Ad Council for the "Fight Global Warming Campaign" of the Environmental Defense League, is meant to warn viewers of the dangers of global warming.
The video used, however, is first of a man, and then of a young blonde girl, standing in the path of an onrushing locomotive.
Ask any locomotive conductor or engineer: The most horrifying part of the job is the feeling of helplessness and despair that comes when pedestrians are killed.
“That the Ad Council would use such a distasteful image suggests an indifference to the sensitivities of operating rail employees and a total lack of compassion for their emotional well being," UTU International President Paul Thompson said.
Thompson urged all UTU members, families and friends to contact Peggy Conlon, the president and chief executive officer of the Ad Council, to demand they stop running this advertisement.
A video of the advertisement can be seen by clicking here.
Conlon dismissed earlier attempts at reason. She was dismissive of the concerns of transportation labor and has refused to answer subsequent inquiries.
