I know the Texas Eagle and the Sunset Limited merge at San Antonio.

We'll be in a sleeper from St Louis.

Where will our sleeper be in the consist leaving San Antonio?

We'll be going to downtown San Antonio during the layover and wonder whether our sleeper will be approximately in the same location when we return to the station?

Eagle is attached to the rear of the SL.

If you are in the 421 sleeper from STL, after the switching is made in SAS it will be the very last car on the train. The Dining Car will be towards the front of the train. During the time in SAS, you may not have access to the car once you get off. It is disconnected and moved to another track and may be locked. You may have to wait for general boarding.

You will also get a New Sleeping Car attendant in San Antonio for the trip to LAX as the one on the trip from CHI-SAS will return to CHI on the morning #22 to CHI! Remember to tip them before they leave the Train in SAS if they deserve a tip for their service!

And the Sunset Ltd #1 that your Sleeper is hooked too for the SAS-LAX leg will have a Real Diner in place if the CCC with a different crew also!

If you're booked in the 421 sleeper it will generally be the very last car on the westbound Sunset Limited. If you are booked in the 21 sleeper then your original car will remain in San Antonio and you will be transitioning to a new sleeper that originated in New Orleans and is located near the front of the train.

Usually the 421 cars will be located somewhere between Montana and Commerce streets. However they can be as far north as Houston street if they're in the process of active switching. You can either remain on board or get off the train during the switching process. Just keep in mind that once you get off you may be dependent on the staff's prerogative to let you back in.

Yes, a few years ago we detrained our 421 car after arriving in San Antonio and were told it was o.k. to go out to walk around. After about an hour we walked back to the car and found the doors locked. Luckily a worker was cleaning and fixing some plumbing and allowed us back on the car after some knocking on the door and showing him our ticket. We were lucky that guy was in the hallways since the SCA had already left the car and no other Amtrak train personnel were around.

The new SCA did not board the car until several hours later and we may have been stuck sitting in the station instead of our room for the night. A word to the wise.
