INO the single level trains are important to use especially during Thanksgiving. Those commuter cars allow passengers to alight and board faster. That prevents following trains from stacking up behind the commuter cars. Its all about fluidity. Delaying trains to final destinations of WASH , NYP, BOS can slow down the whole day's trains.

The single level equipment also has a bit more luggage capacity. They lock out the center doors and use the area as luggage storage. The seats also flip, which allows people to ride together and store additional luggage if necessary.

The train have been called commuter extras ever since they decided you wouldn't receive a discount or coupon for riding it.

What they should do several months out if possible, is program the reservation system to place endpoint-to-endpoint traveler's on the Amtrak equipment, and 'short's', say Philly to Baltimore or such, on the commuter equipment. While the only 'fair' way is 'first-come-first-served'.....the alternate suggestion may be 'fair' as well....depends on your view. Perhaps they should offer a slightly reduced rate on the commuter equipment?

Personally, I think they should load the point to point long hauls on the commuter sets and let them make a run for it. They should skip the local stops, discharging only towards the end of their runs. That would shave some time off their schedules as well. Additionally, they used to offer a discount for the commuter equipment....sort of.They gave you a credit towards future travel.

At the very least, I think they should reinstate that policy.

I remember glancing in previous years at the commuter equipment press release that included language that the commuter extras were listed as certain % cheaper.
