To book online...or not to book?

A friend and I are going on a Rail journey throughout California that will last a week. Someone mentioned to me in passing not to make reservations online at this time as the pricing for sleepers (we are planning to get one on the CS from SAC-LAX or on the return, depending on price.) was very wonky for some reason.

Was she merely blowing smoke, or is there really an issue going on with online bookings?

There really is an issue that causes the prices on the website to occasionally be higher when booking for 2 people.

You can check by trying to book the room with one person, and taking note of what the accommodation charge is. If you try and book for 2 and the accommodation charge is higher, it's very likely that it's incorrect.

Besides the problem with the online fare for 2 as described above (Call an agent to book and you'll get the correct sleeper fare), I would book ASAP. The fares probably will go up.
