ok this is stupid but still. why not have a train towing service whether it be for Amtrak or a freight RR. it could be a company all by itself that provides towing service for broken down trains. something like if your locomotive breaks down in the middle of now where call us :D charge a fee for each mile of tow like they do with cars.
 
They would have to get an Okay from the host railroad that the tracks are on. So the dispatch might not be so friendly to send down some private Engine(s) down there mainline that has a dead unit on it. Plus you would have to have a whole regional network. You can't have your unit sitting in LAX and get a call in say MIA and say oh yeah I'll be there in ummm err.. 4 days. Then having to get track warrents to move all the way from LAX to MIA to go save your train. Meanwhile CSX has extra power and crews that can move that train in like 6 hours with out to much cost to them.
