Unpaid reservations

How far in advance can I make a reservation and not pay for it? I called amtrak and the rep said she didn't know!

Generally, they will hold reservations without payment for 7 days. If the reservation is for travel within 7 days, the time is shorter (or possibly you must pay when making a reservation).

That seems way too generous!

If making the reservation by phone, the agent can sometimes extend ticketing deadline by a few days beyond what computer assigns.

7 days seems to be the norm for LD reservations. I understand the hold period may be shorter for other trains, like the Acelas or NE Regionals.
