The ironic thing is the EB would have made it through the area before the derailment had a BNSF locomotive not been added at Havre due to a problem with one of the Amtrak locomotives. The EB was about an hour and a half late by the time it got out of Havre, and the freight locomotive was making it progressively later as time went on.
Then again, if the derailment was caused by a problem with the track, an earlier EB could have been the one involved in the derailment
Amtrak was unable to find a viable busing option, so passengers got to spend the night and most of the next day sitting in Culbertson, MT waiting for the track to be reopened.
After losing another hour or so outside of Grand Forks, ND to wait for a fresh St. Cloud, MN-based crew to board, the train arrived at Chicago about 19.5 hours late. The BNSF locomotive added at Havre stayed with the train the entire way.
