Looking for info on the Blue Water train

How are you getting from Flint airport ( which is a nice airport btw) to Port Huron station? They're not all that close and in December the freeway could be bad if it snows. From my recollection the Blue Water leaves quite early. And by the way, there's nothing around the train station in...

An Amtrak route segment no longer in use

From my recollection, the International was another victim of post 9/11 actions. This was a great route and I'm sorry it's gone.

trip report royal oak-ann arbor rt yesterday

Good to hear. Always liked that restaurant. It was one of the first restaurants in Michigan to have a cape cod style shore dinner ( in a bucket, if I remember). But my all-time favorite restaurant growing up, of course, was Joe Muer's. Lots of memories!

Who in the world are you?

I'm 62 with a life-long love of trains ( I'm told my 1st train trip was when I was 6 weeks old when we took a train from New Rochelle to Pittsburgh -- and then on to Detroit by car). While I've live in the currently Amtrak-less Phoenix metro area, I still consider Detroit to be my home town...

Alice Lloyd Hall. Is it still there? And to bring this back to trains, is there still a restaurant in the Ann Arbor Train Station? When I was there it was ( or maybe it was after), it was the Gandy Dancer. I used to take the train into Michigan Central before Amtrak. I also knew people that...

I'm very jealous. I'd love to be able to do that. And doing historical research into the Michigan Daily for 1968. Thanks for making me feel VERY old -- 1968 was my freshman year at Michigan. One great memory was watching the final game of the Series in the lounge of Alice Lloyd Hall (...

Washington to Washington (or coast to coast)

Me Too! I just booked this exact trip for January 2013( except I'm going straight through without an overnight in Chicago). I've got a roomette for both legs of the trip. Can't wait to see Montana, et al in the snow. I'm already excited.

Moving to San Diego - Amtrak California questions...

I'm going to be totally presumptuous and answer for thully at least by saying in the very unlikely scenario that he becomes a Padres fan, he would never stop being a Tigers fan. You never leave Michigan, you just occasionally move from it. I've lived outside Detroit for over 35 years and never...

    Amtrak iPad/iPhone app update

Here's a question: Once the online barcode is "live" and accepted, will the act of opening it up on your iphone/ipad etc count as "printing out your ticket and thus affect one's ability to get a full refund. Just wondering.

    Amtrak Dream Routes

Chi - DTW - Tor - NYC and at the same time restore the train LAX - PHX as long as it stops at Tempe. And while we're at it, let's have every single route mentioned in this thread.

    Newark Airport to Amtrak

Haven't done Philadelphia yet, but I have done both EWR and BWI. I actually prefer Washington National (DCA -- refuse to call it Reagan) for ease of connecting to mass transit (and even Amtrak). Good luck to your adventurous teenager. It'll be a great experience I'm sure.

Detroit: three hours to kill at/near Amtrak depot

Thank You! I just got back from Detroit and I very much appreciate the realistic and positive words (and pictures) about the city I still consider my home ( even though I haven't lived there for over 35 years). Went to Comerica Park and saw a Tigers game for the first time since they left...

    Most Interesting Destination By Amtrak?

No one has mentioned yet San Juan Capistrano. Lots of interesting things within walking distance of the train station plus some great restaurants and an Antique Mall. Plus the Mission ( which I've never ponied up the money to go inside but it looks interesting). A great Amtrak daytrip from...
