Train 66 (2/9-10) Breakdown on Freezing Night

I'm no electrician but what I was describing was at NRO, after we resumed forward motion. I was suggesting spotting #66 as far (railroad) east as possible and using it to keep pax warm until the train behind us (#190 I think) arrived. The "train bridge" would be the platform itself with #66...

Train 66 (2/9-10) Breakdown on Freezing Night

I never was able to get a good sense of how much staff was on this train. I boarded in WAS, seems like there was a crew change in NYP (although I was half-asleep as best one can be with all the commotion of a major station stop). And when #66 pulled away from NRO toward Stamford, I think they...

Train 66 (2/9-10) Breakdown on Freezing Night

I agree with this up to a point and that is assuming you have some new information to share or that you are aware you don't have new info to share but haven't forgotten about the folks in the back. I also give credit to crews who give an estimated departure time, even if that gets busted...

Train 66 (2/9-10) Breakdown on Freezing Night

I believe the power came on first, perhaps for 15 minutes or so before we got permission to move. That's when I recall the announcement about needing dispatcher approval to move. And of course by this point the sun had risen so we weren't literally in the dark any longer. The train was...

Train 66 (2/9-10) Breakdown on Freezing Night

Long time lurker and seldom poster here. I was on this train and was interviewed by the TV and print media who met the train at South Station around 12:45PM. I guess it was my first experience with a media scrum. This experience capped off a pretty long journey for many on the train, who like...

    Where is #67 at Amtrak.com?

Resurrecting an old thread here .. Is CSX doing more track work on the Peninsula Subdivision?? Went to check fares from NPN to BOS (which have really, really zoomed into the stratosphere in the last few months) and it looks like the evening train (#66) is cancelled Mon through Thur. Didn't...

    Kindergarten Walk

I don't think this quite captures the essence of the kindergarten walk. I view the term more of the way that certain stations have access to the platforms (tracks) restricted except when the kindergarteners are escorted, unlike what happens with the boarding process elsewhere. Compare and...

Red Caps; how does Amtrak decide where to have them?

Nothing like replying to one's own post and continuing a thread hijack with my 1st world problems specific to NHV (and NPN!) but .. the_traveler got me curious so I looked at the new timetable that was released this week. It's kinda strange and probably was this way before this timetable was...

Red Caps; how does Amtrak decide where to have them?

I will confirm that it was in the northbound direction. I checked my large bag from NHV to BOS the night before. When I arrived on the Acela I just walked to the baggage area and retrieved it .. no muss, no fuss (other than the 2 trips to Union Station).

Red Caps; how does Amtrak decide where to have them?

Your post raises a related question for me: what does it take to get checked baggage service at a station? That one really seems arbitrary. My home station (NPN) is staffed for ticketing and is the end of the line of a pretty darned long run on the NER (644 miles) but has no checked baggage...

a silly little question re: CPAP machine onboard

I traveled from LAX to SEA two years ago in the Coast Starlight with a CPAP in a standard bedroom. If I recall correctly I did not even have an extension cord on that trip and it seems to me I plugged into the outlet at the sink and had the machine on the floor and I slept in the lower bunk...

Re-blog: Sunday Train on DailyKos - PRIIA Section 210

DISCLAIMER: The linked site is a left-leaning political blog although the linked article is not particularly partisan. Been traveling quite a bit lately so I'm only just catching up on the blogs. Anyway this article caught my eye and I thought the group might enjoy it. It's part of an ongoing...

    C-Pap users in sleeping cars

I've traveled with my CPAP in both the Superliner bedroom and in the Superliner roomette. I neglected to bring an extension cord but it was able to work for me. Between the cord length and the hose length I managed. However, I did have to put it on the floor. And I really didn't have much...

Thank you for attending and sharing your notes. Blue skies .. except right now when we've been having on & off thunderstorms here in Newport News for the last 4 hours.

    VHSR Annual Meeting

Wouldn't mind attending but I have a work conflict. It annoys me when boards and commissions meet during working hours. Tells me they don't want public input. I say this as a former municipal employee that provided staff support to the Planning Commission. While I personally was grateful our...
