Rode the Amtrak Great Dome Today - Awesome

20 Superliners is not an insignificant number. With 20 Superliners, Amtrak could hypethetically return the Cardinal to Superliner equipment and spread the Amfleet II's Viewliners around.

    BART Stations

WMATA borrowed A LOT of ideas from BART. After all, WMATA was being designed at about the same time BART started. Just look at the car layout: nearly identical (except DC's are much nicer B) ).

    Amtrak: Toronto - Vancouver

Well, I took the Cascades 4-5 years ago, but I doubt procedures have changed that much. Coming into Canada, you collect your baggage, and proceed through customs. Coming back, I assume they check the baggage in Canada, because it wasn't checked when I got off at Edmonds. Coming back, shortly...

    Inside Train Temperatures

Maybe I'm just incrediably lucky, but I can't recall the temperature on any Amtrak train being even slightly uncomfortable, or any issue ever happening with the HEP. Luck of the draw, I suppose...

Damaged Wires Block Service Into New York's Penn Station

Source: http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:BsFCg...&lr=lang_en Of course, I forgot about the qualifications problems (sorry :( ), but 25kV 60Hz is what the new Boston electrifcation uses. So I would see no problem with the Acelas using it. The Acelas being towed would then be because A: the...

Damaged Wires Block Service Into New York's Penn Station

There are the various NJ Transit branch-offs near Seacucus, several of which are electrified, which I'm sure NJ Transit would let Amtrak use in an emergency, especially on a Sunday afternoon. I'd imagine that's where Amtrak is Y-ing the trains.

    Capitol Limited

I know it was still using hertiage equipement in 1992. I'd imagine it probably switched when the Superliner II's arrived a few years later.

    Airports

The planning is basically done, and the political will to build and fund it is here. What we are waiting for is the $900 million the FTA more or less promised us, and is now clearly trying to stall rather than actually give. Still, as a Virginian, I'd much rather fly out of Dulles then BWI. In...

What does your Forum User Name mean?

There's no hidden meaning in mine, just a reference to what is, in my opinion, one of the most interesting (and certainly influental) sagas in railroad history.

    Why Acela in the NEC?

The Acelas were bought for political reasons more than anything. Getting funding for new equipment is difficult, it is much easier if it is supported by high-speed hype. Amtrak nedds to retire all of the 40+ year old Amfleet I's that run daily on the Regionals, and the Acelas are the first step...

    A Question of Points Accumulation

Did you pay for your trip with the Chase card? Maybe there's some sort of bonus for doing so. I can't think of anything else. Well, as long as Amtrak doesn't accuse you of doing anything illegal to get the 90 points, I suppose it doesn't really matter.

    New Lines

How many bills has Bush vetoed in his entire six years? Three, I believe. Anything that he vetoes or seriously threatens to veto becomes extremely significant, just look at SCHIP. Bush doesn't hate Amtrak, per say, he just thinks it beneath his notice. My bet is that if this becomes an actual...

    From NYTIMES

Maybe Wyoming or South Dakota ;) ? They couldn't favor any particular Amtrak route, and would DRASTICALLY reduce operating costs of their HQ :) .

Senate bill passes, but still want to cut 40% operating expense.

As long as its simply a goal and not a requirement, it doesn't matter too much. If it is a requirement, this could be bad...

They almost always change to diesels at Washington D.C. On occaision they change at Philadelphia, but that hasn't been done regularly in years.

Mr. Stearns, Put simply, none of us, including Alan, work for Amtrak or have any affiliation/important contacts with them. We are simply a group of ordinary people who have an intrest in discussing Amtrak. If you want to do business with Amtrak, you should contact them directly, or through...

    Newbie Experience and Questions

    1. How likely is it that someone will cancel not show up for a room? Don't get your hopes up. I'd say you have maybe a 1 out of 4 chance, at best. 2. I looked at the sticky about upgrading and saw nothing about the waiting list for sleepers, is it a unicorn? From what I know, a unicorn...

    Amtrak Advertising on PBS

Well, okay, a sponsorship message, then. It amounts to the same thing, as far as Amtrak publicity is concerned.

    Amtrak Advertising on PBS

Well, I turned on PBS this morning, and what did I see but an animated Acela going by  ! I caught the last part of the words "...Amtrak is a proud sponsor of Thomas and Friends." The Amtrak logo apeared, then went away after a few seconds, and the ad ended. Sure enough, the next show...
