    Downeaster collission

I'm standing in the woods between Dover and Wells, trackside next to the Downeaster #681. We hit something on the tracks. The locomotive and first coach car are on fire, and one truck on the first coach derailed. No fatalities, some minor injuries. Fire department is clearing things up.

The Empire Builder due to depart Seattle today is showing a service disruption. Two weeks of cancellations... now what? I am seriously getting nervous.

    Maricopa Express

A friend of mine, who lives in Havasu City, AZ, asked me to research options for her to get to her husband's Air Force graduation in Arlington, TX. Of course, my first bet was the Texas Eagle. In trying to find a way to get her from Havasu to somewhere along the Eagle's route, I made a cursory...

    California- The Highlights

I gave this advice to a poster in the main forum, and somebody suggested I post it up here as well.

    Good Customer Service from Amtrak

So I went down to the Metrolink station last night to pick up tickets for an upcoming train trip to San Francisco. (Woo! Spring Break!) My wife and I are traveling RIV-BFD-EMY-SFC, which means three tickets per person, each way. That adds up to 12 tickets. I walked up to the Metrolink machine...

    ClubAcela Passes Gone?

With my upcoming trip this summer, I wanted to see if I couldn't score a few one-day passes to ClubAcela, as it'd give me a nice place to leave luggage in the Northeast. I know I don't have enough AGR points, but I wanted to see how much the passes would cost (so I know how many times I have to...

    Print-at-home tickets

I'm sure this has been brought up before, but I couldn't manage to find an appropriate older thread, so I'll start this one. Why is it that Amtrak can't manage to use print-at-home tickets? I've heard before that it's because this requires a data connection back to a central server in order to...

What's up with the Cascades to Vancouver?

I've posted before about our planned trip this summer, and one leg we want to do is PDX-Vancouver on the Cascades service. There's one train a day, #516, that runs the full route rather than forcing a bus transfer at Seattle (which is a no-no on a USA Rail Pass, because that's a waste of a...

    Backpacking Across America in Coach

So my wife is going to finally finish with school this spring, her long-coveted teacher's credential finally in her hands. To celebrate, we're planning a month-long train trip around the country. Current itinerary looks something like: (Metrolink RIV-LAX), LAX-PDX-VAC-VIC, then ferry to SEA...

    OKJ at night?

I'm booked on the Coast Starlight heading up to the Bay Area for the holidays, getting off at Oakland's Jack London Square station. My plan was to walk from there to the Lake Merritt BART station (and head for Castro Valley), but I'm concerned for a few reasons. 1- Oakland doesn't have a...
