So as I was browsing Vegas hotels today, I read the Plaza downtown Vegas is being remodeled.

Anyone know if they are closing or changing the old ramp at the Plaza?

Not that it matters much. When down there, have always enjoyed looking at the ramp I used to walk up with my suitcase.

I only remember walking up it, cannot remember walking down it. Too excited to see the slots on the way in maybe?

What ramp are you referring to? Yes there is a lot of work being done at the Plaza Hotel in Vegas.
The ramp you would walk up to the Amtrak train. It is back by where they have the food court.
Aloha

OK that area, in Particular the Amtrak Station building, is being used as as an employee break area. I have not gone to the area from inside the Plaza but here is a picture from the back of the Plaza of the Station

If you look closely on the right side you can see a worker taking a smoke break and access to the platform is fenced off.

That seems like an oxymoron

worker (from a casino that allows smoking) taking a smoke break

Who ever said Casino's are logical, but the old Amtrak Station has been turned into a Plaza Employee break room, and if I am not mistaken (at this time) employees may not smoke in front of the players, GO Figure, On the news the last few months have covered the health issues of Casino workers.

You posted these pics before, thanks for sharing again.

I'll probably take a walk over there while in Vegas and see if I can see the ramp. Sorry I wasn't more clear about the ramp, just assumed everyone would know which ramp :)

I am picking up fellow member Joe Hess on Monday If I find free parking I will go inside the Plaza, unfortunately the Plaza charges 5 dollars to Park. Let me know when you come to town.

Since when?

Last time I was there, in the garage above the bus station next door to the Plaza, it was FREE!

If I have a choice of going to a casino (which I rarely do - got to save money for the penthouse suite

) where one charges parking and one offers free parking, I'll chose the casino with free parking!

I have never heard of any casino - anywhere in the country - that charges for parking! I live within 50 miles of 2 of the 3 biggest casinos IN THE WORLD and neither charges for parking!

Most of the Vegas casino's do have Free parking, but for some obscure reason some of the downtown do charge with rates from 5 to10 dollars. Next door to the Plaza, The Main Street Station, the parking is free, but the lot is about 1/2 mile from the Plaza a bit long of a walk with my knees and Joe's bags. And according to the Weather report Vegas will be fresh from the weekend showers, To bad he is in them now in California.

At least before, the casinos that did charge (I think the California was one) had a "validation" stamp machine near the front desk (or somewhere obvious) so you could "validate" your ticket and say that you went to that casino. (Make Joe walk to the Plaza to validate it!

) Now that I think about it, I think the Plaza had one too!

Must I teach you how to get things free, Eric - from over 2,000 miles away?

I may just have to come out there to straighten you out!

I remember that area from my trips to Vegas on the Desert wind something like 20 years ago. When were those pictures taken? The next to last Picture shows the proposed Monorail connection from Downtown to the strip.

I took those pictures in October of 2008. I worked across the street and would wonder over on my lunch break every once in a while to check it out.

Evidently you have never been to Atlantic City- pretty much every casino charges for parking.

I just returned from LV and did indeed enter the Plaza, yes the remodel is underway, the casino has been halved in size was rather dead but more importantly the ramp is still there the paintings-murals were also still there. I really hope we see rail traffic passenger that is return to LV

The Plaza charges to park, but gives you a refund voucher to redeem inside at the casino cashier for the full amount. The Main Street Station casino does the same. They just want to make sure that if you park there you are actually going inside. Places like Binion's and the Golden Nugget actually charge to park, but the valet is always free.

Kind of excited to see the Plaza remodeled, really needed an overhaul. Also read they are going back to the name Union Plaza.

Maybe they will leave the ramp, thinking it might be used for rail traffic in the future.
