Does Bush have any power to force a shutdown? Do you think he has the majority in Congress--if he pushes it--to vote for the shutdown? Also, when reading the article about it, the writer quoted admin officials as saying that it would take years (If the writer was clear). What kind of time factor are we discussing?

Also: any ideas as to which LDT WOULD survive a change? Presumably the Coast Starlight.

The president cant force a shut down, he has to convince congress of it. Dont expect any changes this year. If Bush wins re-election and has another 4 years who knows what could happen.

One things certain..if the Bush plan goes into effect..NO, NONE, ZERO long distance trains will be around within 2-3 years. Its a just a bunch of double talk to scrap all long distance trains.

Agreed, there is no way "the states" can operate long distance trains, even if they wanted. This is all about dumping the entire system. And if Bush is reelected I assure you he will have a mandate to do just about anything he wants, especially since it will be his final term. It will also make it easier for Congress to go along with him knowing they can blame mistakes on his admin after they are gone.
