I want to redeem points for a coach seat and pay cash for a business-class upgrade. Can that all be done as one transaction? If so, by which means: phone/online/station agent? Does it require two transactions? Say, book coach online, then later modify the transaction to upgrade to business class?

If it can't be done, is there a Plan B I can use?

No, it cannot be done. Amtrak does not offer upgrades to reward tickets. The only Plan B I am aware of is to pay the fare for Business Class and use your points another time.

Inquiring minds want to know! I would like to take #66 using the 3,000 point northeast zone rate, but don't think the $39 charge is worth 3,500 points to upgrade to BC. I wonder if it could be done onboard for $39? :huh:

It is entirely up to the conductor. Some allow it, others do not.
