Anybody know what happened to P091-13 that went through wpk today (4/14)? It was about 7 hours late. Also short - only had two coaches instead of the usual 4. All I get from the amtrak site is service disruption, no info at all even back to nyp.

from another board:

Train 91 derailed last coach this morning in Estill S.C. It is reported that the last coach derailed and damage was sustained to the two coaches ahead of it. Reports state that it was an old break in the rail and it rolled under the cars. No injuries reported. Train was able to leave the scene and continue without two coaches on the rear.

only one hit ground but two cars ahead of derailed car were damaged.

maybe rail popped up ???

only two cars were left behind.

It is unusual that the rest of the train continued. Usually when there is a derailment, that's the end of that trip.
It depends on the derailment. If the derailment occurs at the end of the train, and the front section is fine, the train will continue, minus the derailed cars. If most/all of the cars derail (or if the engines derail), then that's probably the end of the trip.

Two days ago, the Empire Builder derailed in Milwaukee (the diner split a switch, and it and the first coach went on the ground). They probably would have continued that train, since the rest of the train wasn't damaged, except that both tracks were blocked by the derailed diner (which served dinner to the passengers while on the ground, while Amtrak worked out arrangements to keep passengers overnight in MKE and put them on the next day's Empire Builder, which ran a double-length consist).

That would have been one to see!

That would be an experience, eating in a derailed diner. And it would be interesting to see that double length Empire builder too.

Boy the brown smelly stuff really smacked into the fan today, and it is getting on everything.

How many engines does a double consist need to pull all those cars?
I'm told they ran four engines, though I'm sure that was mostly necessary in order for there to be power for the eastbound.

The double-length consist, from what I understand, ran to Spokane, where half the train was cut off and sent back eastbound as 8/28 that would have turned from the derailed trainset.
