We will have a layover in CHI next Friday between our CL and EB trips. Any recommendations for an eating establishment for lunch within walking distance of the CHI station? (We prefer not to eat within the station complex). In the past we have been to Blackie's and have always been satisfied. Should we try another place or stand pat?

PIZZA anyone????

Lou Mitchell's which is just 1 block west of CUS on Jackson. If you have time, also be sure to go up to The 103 observation deck on the SEARS Tower.

Very short walk from CUS! Exit on Jackson, cross bridge and a few blocks (or less) on the right!

I have easily done it between the CL and EB! :)
I have to say its an easy walk it was my first time in that area of chicago and I am a teenager and had no trouble getting to it by myself. Oh, and yeah the pizza is GREAT!

Lou Mitchell's is a great place, it's open only for breakfast and lunch. The food is fabulous and it's got a nice retro style decor. It's a real Chicago place.

This may get me kicked out of this forum, but I don't care for the Chicago-style deep dish pizza that's served at Giordano's. Try the thin crust, instead.

A rose by any other name smells as sweet! This arguement will never be settled but even though I

consider PIZZA the most over rated and over priced food(why else are there so many kinds and places?)I must

say that Chicago Pizza is pretty darn tasty!!!

Giordano's and Lou Mitchell's are always the favorites of forum members, but are there any Chicago Style Hot Dog places near the station?
Nobody going to Chicago should miss out on a Chicago Style Hot Dog!
Not quite a walk from CUS, but how about a "cheseburger cheeseburger no-Pepsi--Coke" at the Billy Goat Tavern. Made famous on Saturday Night Live.

Gold Coast Dogs right upstairs in the Food Court throws out a decent dog, along with a respectable Italian Beef. And you can haul them back to the Lounge or grab a stool or table in the Hallway and watch the commuters and other folks scurry about.

Backwards. No Coke. Pepsi. Also "No fry. Cheep."

EDIT: In the SNL sketch it's no Coke. Pepsi. In this video of the real guy it is in fact no Pepsi. Coke.

You are indeed correct, now that I think of it. Thanks for correcting the record. It's been decades since I watched Belushi and Akroyd do the SNL skit.

Gold Coast Dogs has been my eatery of choice during the times I've waited in Chicago between trains. Good eating!

I've never tried Gold Coast Dogs - do they have the steamed sesame hot dog buns, steamed hot dogs, and the fixings include hot peppers and a thin slice of pickle? The hot dog buns must be sesame and must be steamed and the hot dogs also must be steamed. If not, they're just not Chicago style hot dogs.

Betty;

Just a trivia question but is there such a place as "Adam's Ribs" anywhere near CUS? I remember it from an episode of MASH and was wondering if it was fictional or real...or for that matter still in business?

I can't give high enough praise for Luke's Italian Beef. Fantastic sandwiches, large portions, very reasonably priced. They're located at 215 W Jackson, only about a five minute walk away from Union Station. The Italian Beef sandwich is as uniquely Chicagoan as pizza or a ketchup-free hotdog (both of which you can also get at Luke's) It's not a fancy place, and it's not open for dinner. One caveat: cash only. It's right next door to Giordano's, so the previously posted directions will get you there.

I don't care much for Giordano's. I think Lou Malnati's is a better pizza at a better price, but there aren't any locations within reasonable walking distance of Union Station.

Just acrossed the bridge on Jackson St. On the right side of Jackson going north. A new bagel place opened last spring. The NEW YORK CITY BAGEL DELI. They were closed on the 4 of July when we were there. So I cant comment on the food.

I haven't heard of Adam's Rib, but that doesn't mean it never existed. The only place near or in CUS that I can recall was called "The Lion's Den". It was in an area on the west side of CUS that is now blocked off.

I like Lou Malnati's. It's not close to the station, but it appears that at least one of its restaurants is off the El near the Merchandise Mart.

Perhaps Lou Malnati's delivers... Normally establishments would not deliver to a train station, but if someone paid by credit card and met them curbside.

I also did get to stop at Giordanos between my connection of the CONO and the LSL couple weeks ago, and yes it takes a while to be made, but its awesome pizza and I brought it back with me onto the LSL
