That isn't true, the X Train is scheduled to begin service in thirteen months, they've got the rolling stock now, they've signed operaing agreements (though not all) and they've got a plan to raise the remaining necessary money through private investment, not government. See the Wikipedia...

IDK how you define minimal, but there's generally at least a daily manifest freight north and south along the line, plus assorted locals.

And why exactly do you think that would come back should private railroads take over? Clearly, they have no incentive to bleed money as Amtrak does, so they could cut costs further, say by eliminating sleepers and food service (oh look, the things you want), or by moving into land-cruise...

Because it says Amtrak in big letters on the top. Hardly an implausable mistake. It's the Empire Builder. It's schedule is more than two days long; one station stop is not going to add hugely to that.

It's been close to a year now since then, but when I boarded the Meteor at NYP, the seats were definitely assigned both southbound and northbound. Don't recall if it was on the platform or in the station, but people were given specific seat numbers, and it worked well.

Don't see any option but to put bikes on the cars, since the train runs with a P42 on each end. Even if there was a cab car involved, the power switches at New Haven to an AEM-7, so the bikes would still have to be in the cars if they want to offer bike service along the NEC.

Thanks everyone for the advice; it went pretty much exactly as y'alls said. There was a brief altercation between an Amtrak police officer and someone (clearly OBS staff are not the only ones in need of competance training), but other than that, no excitement. All in all,it was a lot less...
