    Bedroom Differences in Superliners

GeorgeK, based on your description, you had a refurb'd S-1. Curved & paneled storage doors, push-knobs on the faucet are the key. The pic posted by fixj is of a non-refurb S-1. The closet by the door identifies it as S-1. I've been in all the bedrooms, both refurb & non, so I know the...

America by Rail-Escorted Rail Tour information request

I have taken 7 trips with them, and have #8 booked for September. Guess they must be doing something right !!!! The only disruption I've experienced was in 2013 when the Zephyr did not run between Denver & Salt Lake City due to track washouts from flooding in Colorado, but it was known about &...

Regarding a CZ Guidebook I have

It was available at the gift shop at the Grand Junction station last time I was there (in 2012). $13.00 for each of the 3 volumes (Chicago to Denver, Denver to SLC, SLC to San Francisco). Order form included this address: Flashing Yellow Guidebooks, P.O. Box 3533, Evergreen CO 80437

#5 (11) Held up by flooding in Colorado

I just got off the phone with Amtrak. The plan for today, and the next few (several?) days, is: #5 will turn at Denver (to become #6), and #6 will turn at Grand Junction (to become #5), with bustitution between Denver & Grand Junction. All subject to change at any time, of course.

Taxi availability at Salt Lake City

I used Yellow cab for my westbound SLC arrival last July. Called them a day or 2 ahead of time, then called again enroute with an ETA, and again about 5 minutes before arrival. They were there when I got off the train. I'd use them again.

    Orienting to Chicago Union Station

This is actually the north concourse. Odd numbers north, even numbers south.

    Privatize food service?

Well, I also had two Zephyr trips in July, and found the service and the food to be quite good. No decline over the past 3 years, in my experience. But, as they say, "your mileage may vary."

I had thought I've seen everything

Yep, that's me! I confess. :( But now I use gaffer's tape. It's duct tape without the residue. :)

I had thought I've seen everything

Simple solution to the light/curtain problem: duct tape!! Never leave home without it!!

    Route Guide Idea

Good idea, but not exactly new. I have a bi-directional Southwest Chief route guide, dated 1998. Pretty nice - 25 pages each direction (just flip it over for the opposite direction), with a map in the center. Got it when I rode it in '99, don't know when they dropped it. Next time I rode was...

what is absolute latest you can print tickets?

Yep, day of departure, hour before, even less than that is just fine. Been there, done that.

    When do we eat?

I can answer with firsthand experience: No.

    Quik-Trak question

True. But when part of the trip is on AGR & the rest is real money, then they can't be on one res. But in cases like that, I have always called Customer Relations and had them cross-reference the reservations so they will know I'm making the connection. And if it looks like it's gonna be close...

    Quik-Trak question

Thanks for the responses, guys. I didn't want to print the return ticket as I will probably have to cancel it and it would be easier if it's not printed. I checked with the station agent at my departure point and he said even if he prints it, the entire res will print, same as Quik-trak. I'm not...
