Express Trak cars finally going away

The Express Trak cars in LA are just about gone. A batch left a couple months ago, and it looks like more just left recently. No idea where they went, but it's a lot easier to see into the yard and look at the actual passenger equipment now!

Bedroom E--E for Excellent or Excreable?

My wife and I are booked in Bedroom E on the SWC in August. (The son is in his own roomette). So, is E a good bedroom or a stinkburger? I tried searching, but the engine doesn't like to search for words of one letter, like E.

    Odd train at LAUS

Pulling into LAUS this morning on the Metrolink, I saw an odd train at the platform. A BNSF freight engine, a gray car that looked like it might've been a mobile office of some kind and at least two silver BNSF passenger cars. The one car I got the best look at had a plate that said Rollins...

    Refund policy

The "1 roomette" topic caused me to check the prices for our planned trip on the SWC this summer. It's gone up a couple hundred since I last priced it. My problem is that my wife won't be sure about her vacation time for another month or so. If I buy the tickets now, my understanding is that...

    Desert Wind may blow again

This story: LA Times story in this morning's paper talked about a possible train from Victorville to Las Vegas. Kind of buried in the story is a mention that Amtrak is considering reviving the Desert Wind.

    Steam engine at LA

I often take Metrolink from LAUS to my home and the train goes right past the Amtrak yard, as some of you know. There was for a long time an old black steam engine at the far end of the yard. Last week, it was actually fired up, and now I think it's gone. Does anyone know what the story on this...

    Odd sighting

On my Metrolink ride to work today in Los Angeles, I saw a car in the Amtrak yard I'd never seen. it was a lounge car, but not like a Sightseer. It had a kind of dome roof that went pretty much the length of the car. It was painted in the new scheme and had "Lounge Car" lettered on the side by...

    How Do They Get Here

I was driving home (in the Los Angeles area) the other day and saw a full Sounder trainset (including engine) on a Metrolink track. My question: When another line (like Metrolink) leases cars, how do they get there? Does an Amtrak crew bring them?

    Eurostar to London

I took my 14-year-old daughter to Paris last week. This figured to be my one chance to travel through the Chunnel, and since my daughter wanted to visit the land of Harry Potter, I made reservations a couple months in advance for us to take the Eurostar train to London for the day. We had...

    Not Quite Amtrak, but . . .

I'm leaving next week for a week in France. While I'm there, I'm going to take the Eurostar train through the chunnel to London for the day. I'll try to post a trip report if anyone's interested (and it's not too far off topic)

    Coast Starlight trip

My wife and I rode the Coast Starlight, leaving Saturday (6/19) from Seattle to LA. It was a fine trip, with a few glitches. The first was that there was no Parlour Car. The interesting thing was that the crew members were the last to know! While waiting to board, I saw the train being moved...

    Radios on the Train

I'll be on the Starlight on Sunday 6/20 (if the trestle near Santa Barbara's fixed by then!) and I wondered if anyone has experience using AM radios in a Superliner. I'd sure like to be able to listen to the Laker game, if they're still playing then, but I'm not sure how well they'll work in an...

    Fire closes rail line

Sounds like bad news for the Starlight, which I'm scheduled to take in a couple weeks. Anyone know more?

    Viewliner Standard Bedrooms

I helped my in-laws book a trip from Florida to Philadelphia this summer. They have a standard bedroom. I'm a West Coast guy, so I've never been in a Viewliner. However, it looks from the diagram on the website that the room is a little bigger than the standard in a Superliner. I'm wondering if...

    Heading South on the Starlight

I just made reservations for my wife and me to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary with a trip from Seattle to LA on the Coast Starlight this June. This will be the first time we've taken a train trip without the kids. One question: does anyone know where the list is that tells which train...

    What train was this?

I live in Corona, Calif., and used to see Amtraks go through all the time up until a few years ago--it was probably the Desert Wind. Today my wife saw an Amtrak Superliner go through and I couldn't think of what train it might have been. The Starlight and Surfliners don't come through here...
