If I don't have at the very least a roomette booked, I don't set foot on an overnight train. Period, end of paragraph.
Don't have a problem with riding the all-coach 350s, 360s, and 370s that operate in and out of my home state/town, however.
Highly recommend the Plaza Motel in Bryan. Clean, Well Maintained, and affordable. If memory serves me correctly, they even give a railfan discount. :) Oh yeah, you MUST love their sign, it's the law.

I will vouch for the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, WI: http://www.nationalrrmuseum.org/
And if you ever make it up to the Great White North, I highly recommend the Canadian Railway Museum near Montreal: http://www.exporail.org/
Don't forget to see the Alleghany @ the Henry Ford Museum...
Guest_GP35_, where are you coming up with those numbers? My local fuel stop has regular #2 for 3.05/gal, B20 for 3.02, and B99 for 2.99! Far cry from $5 I'd say!!!!
and to think that this route was once served by the SEMTA "Silver Streak" several times a day before they made the brilliant decision to pull the plug on that operation... <_< :(
Being dealyed by a freight derailment is one thing, but I can tell you this much...if a circa 1950 dispatcher were to have considerably delayed a passenger train by putting in the hole a buncha times to let freight traffic go by, he would have had some explaining to do by the time his shift was...
If Amtrak could offer a slumbercoach-type accomodation that was priced slightly more than a coach seat and considerably less than a roomette, I would probably ride the LDs a LOT more often than I currently do. I always have been a bit put off by their "everything or nothing" approach when It...
Haven't you guys ever heard the song "Alabamy Bound?".
"Just gave the meanest ticket man on earth,
all I'm worth,
just to stick my footsies in an upper berth!"

This is pretty much the way I feel also. In the end it wouldn't really have that much of an affect on me personally. Would I be majorly bummed if the service were to go away?? You bet! But in the end it would just ultimately mean that my motorhome would get more miles put on it come vacation...
The Regionals and the Silver Service were all operating southbound as usual on 6/29. We were supposed to take #95 to FBG but missed it by a matter of minutes :( , so we took the VRE south instead.
Funny you should mention this story Metro. The Mrs and I just got back from our trip where we took a roomette from TOL to DC and then took the VRE from DC to FBG...where we purchased a 2005 Dodge Sprinter and drove it back home! B)
I also also like to add that any remarks made by me in regard to "steerage" should be taken in jest and are meant to be stabs at the lack of creature comforts, NOT the class or nationality of people to be found riding there.
FWIW, I've also flown coach on NorthWest Airlines and ridden on...
Just curious. I was aboard Last Thursday and the consist looked almost identical, however the trees aren't filled out enough in your pic.
Can anyone tell me about the two Express-Trak reefers coupled onto the bottom? My train also had these and I thought that Amtrak was no longer carrying any...
