    Lacey, Centralia or Kelso?

Thinking about a day round trip before the reroute of the Cascades and Coast Starlight in December. Is there anything of interest near any of these stations to while away a few hours? I'm starting from Seattle.

    input on this planned trip?

I'm looking at a trip next spring, early April. Vancouver to Jasper via the Canadian, overnight in Jasper, then the Skeena to Prince Rupert. Fly back to Vancouver. I'm in Seattle, so would take the Cascades to and from Vancouver. Friday appears to be the only departure date from Vancouver...

    leaf peeping

I'm planning a circle trip for late september for fall foliage-- Adirondack up, ferry across lake champlain, vermonter back to ny. Any opinions on whether business class on the vermonter is worth it?

freight breakdown north of Chemault, OR

Anybody have any info regarding this? I'm on the CS northbound, and we're stuck in Chemault waiting for it to clear.

    starwood

I joined the starwood program (spg) earlier this year, hoping for a generous credit card bonus points offer. I just received one for 30,000, with spending criteria that I can definitely meet. Is this a good offer or should I wait for something better?

Texas Eagle vs. NOL-SAS portion of Sunset Limited

Looks like the new schedule for the Sunset Limited is allowing a couple of valid two-zone AGR routings that haven't been available in the past. For some reason CHI to SEA via the TE/SL/CS is now popping up, and of course SEA to NOL now works via CS/SL. My question in pondering the routes...

    VIA Rail express deals

At least with the current postings. Not looking so good for a one person bedroom trip on the Canadian this winter, though.

    points vs. paid

Going from Seattle to Toronto on points in a roomette, which is a 3-zoner for 35,000 -- EB/LSL/ML. Toledo is at the zone border, right? So if I booked from Seattle to Toledo on points, it would be a 2-zoner for 20,000 points. Then book a paid ticket from Toledo to Toronto for around $220...

points for bedrooms and other travel going up 4/1/12

I just noticed this -- it's going to take more points to redeem a bedroom award. Check out the "redeem for Amtrak travel" page, there's a link to the specifics.

    express deals

I've been watching the Express Deal prices for about a year now and notice that while availability changes throughout the year, the prices remain the same. Today's posting of 2-person cabin deals (Toronto to Vancouver) is about double what it has been. Major bummer if they're raising prices...

if you happen to be in Seattle by the end of the year

The theme for the annual Gingerbread Village at the downtown Sheraton this year is train stations. These are very intricate architect-designed gingerbread houses, and they are a real marvel. I'm slapping myself for not having taken a camera when I was there today. Here's a link...

    Chase Sapphire Preferred card

I'm trying to get Chase to deposit the full 50,000 promotion points for my card. They've asked for the 12-digit promotion number. Anybody know what that is? It's for the 50,000 point promotion from last spring, around April I think. I don't have anything in my records that seems to be what...

    pillows

I just came back from a trip where I was on five different roomettes on four different trains. In each case, I had one standard slab-of-tofu Amtrak pillow, and one noticeably better, fluffier one. This can't be a coincidence. Has anyone else noticed this?

    what's up with the Zephyr?

Now that it's confirmed that I'm not taking the EB this weekend to Chicago, I can start worrying about my return trip via the Zephyr next week. I see service disruptions westbound today, and eastbound yesterday. Anybody know what's up?

    getting from CUS to O'Hare

I'll be taking the EB to CHI in about 10 days, and had figured on taking the blue line from Clinton station to O'Hare, then my hotel's free shuttle. I assume the EB will be late -- if it's after dark, how safe is it for a single female to walk to and ride the blue line to the airport, rolling a...

    eastbound EB

Specifically, where does the Portland sleeper fit in? I'm thinking of starting from Portland instead of my usual Seattle, but have heard that the Portland sleeper is at the end of the train, many cars away from the lounge and the diner.

    CHI to SEA

To keep it to a 2-zone AGR trip I have to change from the CZ to CS at SAC. I thought I'd book an additional SAC to EMY on the CZ, and EMY to SAC on the CS, to shorten the layover and get more train time, but a test booking doesn't give me those options. I can do it, but only by changing...

    problems on the Zephyr

I'm on the Zephyr eastbound. They took us off at Winter Park yesterday and bussed us into Denver for the night. Apparently a car or truck driver hit a railroad bridge just west of Denver, causing enough damage that the repair will take 3 days. At least that's the story that's going around...

    QuikTrac points promotion

Anyone know if the promotion awards points for each single use of Quik Trak? For instance, if I have a four-segment trip on one reservation, do I get four sets of points if I print out each segment separately, at the departure station? (If that's even possible). I've never used QuikTrak, but...

thanks to 25,000 bonus points from new Continental OnePass credit card

I booked SEA-NOL several months ago: CS to SAC, CZ to CHI, Cardinal to CVS, Crescent to NOL -- with a nasty old plane trip back to Seattle to not look forward to. My 25,000 OnePass bonus points posted after about 5 weeks, took one week for them to transfer over to AGR, and now my return trip is...
