    NYP at two AM

So I'll be taking the northbound overnight Regional (66, I think it is?) from New York to Boston later this month, and I was wondering how safe Penn Station is in the middle of the night--how many people are there, how much security, whether I should feel safe sleeping in the waiting area, etc...

I was reading an article on Amtrak e-ticketing, and it mentioned that current practice is for all physical tickets to go to the Amtrak accounting center in...El Paso. Why does Amtrak have administrative facilities in El Paso?

    Vermonter returns

The long and painful bustitution of the Vermonter ended today (10/1/2011), with the first northbound train to arrive in St. Albans this evening and the first southbound train to depart tomorrow. Delays of up to an hour expected due to rebuilding from Irene, though. On a related note, the...

http://www.progressi...-project--27812 <-- USDOT gave the FasTracks project a billion dollars in funding, directed at the Denver Union Station--Denver Airport and Denver Union Station--Wheat Ridge commuter rail lines. The grant should cover about half the cost of construction those two lines.

Work to improve Wolverine speeds to begin later this month

http://trn.trains.co...e%20speeds.aspx <-- subscription only, I believe, so the interesting bits: Work will begin Aug. 22 to raise speeds on 24 miles of Norfolk Southern right-of-way that hosts Amtrak's Wolverine Service trains. Track conditions have restricted speeds to 30 mph on that portion...

Seems Iraq is soon to be ahead of us...

http://www.rail.co/2011/06/27/alstom-in-talks-to-build-high-speed-rail-line-in-iraq/ <-- 650 km long line, speeds up to 250 kph (155 mph). Government signed memorandum of understanding with Alstom for construction, with final agreement expected in a year or so. Pathetic, the third world is...

    Florida and back

Basically, this particular trip came about because I wanted to see an Iron Maiden concert, and having missed them when they played in the Northeast, was only able see them in Florida. So I figured Amtrak would be a pretty nice way to get down there. Never been to Florida before, so this'd be a...

Amtrak: an "admirable passenger railway model"

http://www.thetelegram.com/Opinion/Columns/2011-04-09/article-2414580/America-knows-how-to-do-it-right/1 An "efficient and inexpensive people-mover" and an "admirable passenger railway model" are not ways I would have chosen to describe Amtrak, at least not at present, but if an average rider...

    Amtrak to Norfolk VA...

http://www.virginiabusiness.com/index.php/news/article/virginia-and-norfolk-southern-sign-agreement-to-restore-passenger-rail-to-n/309272/ Pretty much what it says on the tin. I hadn't heard anything about this prior to the announcement, so it sort of caught me by surprise. No complaints, though.
