Express Trak cars finally going away

The Express Trak cars in LA are just about gone. A batch left a couple months ago, and it looks like more just left recently. No idea where they went, but it's a lot easier to see into the yard and look at the actual passenger equipment now!

    Hollywood Does It Again

LAUS is often used as a filming site. I went through there several times when they were shooting "Numbers". Also, many commercials and videos are filmed there, and a bunch more across the street along Olvera Street. More than likely, those who go to the October gathering will see some sort of...

    Early morning etiquette advice

The other bit of good news is that the eastbound CL seems to be a bit late getting into Pittsburgh. It was an hour late when I was on it (in sleepers, though) a couple weeks ago. That extra hour of sleep was very nice! And yes, there will be a trip report coming whenever I can get off my lazy...

    Equipment Utilization

Rafi's point about inheriting mechanical problems is a good one. When I took the SL to Florida a few years back, our car's restrooms had already ceased to function by the time we got to New Orleans. We had about a two-hour layover there (we were running late, natch) and they weren't able to get...

    Railway Media digEplayer?

I tried once to watch a movie in the Lounge. Bad picture on a small TV and you couldn't hear what was going on. Give me peace and quiet, a great view and a refreshing beverage and that's all I need.

Bedroom E--E for Excellent or Excreable?

Thanks to all. I knew that there was one bedroom that was considered not-as-good as the others, but I couldn't recall which one it was. I can't remember which bedroom we had the only time we had one; our other trips having been in the family bedroom. Basically, I can't remember much, it would seem.

Bedroom E--E for Excellent or Excreable?

My wife and I are booked in Bedroom E on the SWC in August. (The son is in his own roomette). So, is E a good bedroom or a stinkburger? I tried searching, but the engine doesn't like to search for words of one letter, like E.

Coast Starlight and the Tehachapi Pass - June 22

I dunno . . . three extra hours to enjoy the PPC. As long as the wine is flowing, it would be OK by me!

The Soft Relaunch of the Coast Starlight

Great report, thanks! So they're charging for the wine tasting now? Last time I took the CS (in 2004), it was free. Oh well, it's worth the $5.

How many cars are in mothballs? Vollenteer help to restore them?

Ooooooh, I can see the picket lines forming right now outside the Beech Grove shops. The union folks there would not look kindly on people taking their jobs, I'm afraid.

Coast Starlight Restart and Pacific Parlour Cars?

    I saw it today. It's . . . Napa Valley

Coast Starlight Restart and Pacific Parlour Cars?

I saw one this morning as my Metrolink went past. Willamette Valley.

    Coast Starlight Parlour Car

Yes. :) Actually, it was a stand-up bar, so you got your drinks (yes, alcoholic), then sat in the lounge area that surrounded it.

    Coast Starlight Parlour Car

I hadn't heard about the "alternative dining." I suppose it means you can eat your dining car food there instead of the dining car. The theater is on the lower level of the car. When I last rode on it, the upper floor was one big lounge with a bar at one end. I barely moved out of there for the...

    Coast Starlight Restart

I couldn't get a photo, but it was indeed the Parlour Car. On the blue stripe under the windows, where it says "Superliner" on most cars, it says (in bigger type) "Santa Lucia Highlands" A friend on my train has a camera in her phone; she will try to get it today.

    Coast Starlight Restart

While riding past the LA yard this morning, I got a 2-second glance at what I think was a repainted Parlour Car. I can't confirm that, but I'll look for it on the way home tonight. I hadn't seen the Parlour Car in the new colours :D yet

5 Hours at the Chicago Station.

We'll have about 3 hours there this summer. Can you walk from the station to the only Chicago landmark I care about, the Billy Goat?

    First 1,000,000 Mile Amtrak Rider

    1,000,000 miles on Amtrak . . . that's a lot of Diet Pepsi! :)

Do they sell coach seats on those cars for that trip?

    Pittsburgh's Penn (Union) Station

We're taking the train to Pittsburgh this summer. After we're dropped off at 5:30 in the morning, what's around there? Is the neighborhood OK? Is there a Denny's or someplace to go for breakfast? We're probably going to go to the airport to pick up our rental car (and my MIL). Does anyone have...
