    Worst Passenger Rail Experience Ever?

got a $500 voucher from Chicago, and a $1500 voucher from Amtrak headquarters. Also got the double charge from Amtrak credited back. No apologys. Took a NARP Amtrak/Via trip (better) soon afterward, but still had a lot of problems. Link to that trip is at the end of the previous report

    Classic Dome on a Surfliner

798/799 to SLO often carry PV's / domes. cars are 'last' in consist one direction and 'first' travelling the other way

When Does Train 14 Detour EB 28 Passengers to a Bus

Besides the dreaded KFalls-Pasco bustitution, if late but still enough connect time they bus KFalls-Portland too - have been there - done that.

    Repaired Superliners

when 'dreaming' about more sleepers, don't ignore the food capacity constraints for long distance trains. Even coach passengers often want more than a snack for meals on long trips, and 3 sleepers is the max capacity of a diner, with sometimes only 'take to your seat' meals available for coach...

Wrecked cars from Bayou Canot accident

of the remaining 3 superliners, coach 34040 survived less than 2 more years and was wrecked in Boise early 1995. Has spent the last 15 years on the RIP (rest-in-peace?) track at the Grove. It is on the "stimulus" repair list with over a million $ in repair estimate. Diner 38030 survived until...

Amtrak Pacific Parlor Car vs. Via Rail Park Car

More park/parlour trivia. First - I mis-spoke. VIA had bought 8 US domes in anticipation of needing more cars. With the cutbacks, they were never used and were sold back to the US in the last year or so. Gateway/Butterworth was involved in many/most of them, but "Silver Sky" that I said he...

Amtrak Pacific Parlor Car vs. Via Rail Park Car

It's unbeleivable how much mis-information gets put up here when the facts are readily accessable. i.e. earlier post "Silver Penthouse is a BNSF Business car". It is a 'stuff and mount' snack bar "Silver Sky is owned by VIA". It is owned by Gateway Rail and is in Illinois "Ex-Milwaukee...

    Trip from Hell (Revisited)

Yes - travel agency refunded the cost of the car rental as a 'goodwill' gesture, and Amtrak issued a 100% refund of the trip (not a voucher). This writeup went to numerous upper level management types and apparently was 'beyond the pale' of what they expected to happen to passengers. As to...

    Trip from Hell (Revisited)

Many of you weren't on the net when I first posted this. Seeing the subject resurrected based on the recent CZ accident, though it would be a good time to revisit the item. Have never seen one to top this (and in retrospect, find it hard to beleive I actually went through it!) enjoy (or...

    Net loss of active Superliners

Finally found pics of the cars damaged in the Somonuak IL #5 car collision 7/13, and it ain't pretty. 32094 and 38059 are cosmetic, but they will be sidelined for a while. 39029 will be on RIP (rest in peace) track for the forseeable future. 31026 snuck out of wreck repair at the Grove and...

    Beech Grove Superliners

In point of fact, NO! Amtrak's equipment inventory shows every superliner that is active, "SD" (stored damaged) or "WR" (wreck repair). All 39 were on the list (plus the 2 I listed a few posts above) - total 41. Yes, 'minor' problems sometimes sideline a car for a day or two somewhere, and...

    Beech Grove Superliners

In addition to the list in this topic, 2 more cars are 'SD' (stored-damaged) vs 'WR' (wreck-repair). 33001 came off in February with no reason I have located so far, and 33010 also happened in February, but it was not 'pulled from service'. 33010 was the 'prototype' for 'diner-lite' LOUNGE...

    Beech Grove Superliners

"Some of the others may already be programmed for existing funds (including the California Superliner project, which has two cars to go)." No way to verify the source, but allegedly 31034 and 34051 are to be 'Calif Cars'. Makes sense since each estimate is under 1 mil and neither car is on the...

    No PPC on #14 tomorrow

No rotation involved - 4 sets - each goes out every 4th day. Cars only substituted for bad-order, scheduled maintenance, or #11 arrival so late in LA that a substitute trainset has to be made up for next day's #14.

    First time trip questions

There are a couple hours of oceanfront from Ventura to Vandenberg and Cuesta pass north of SLO. Also a brief run thru Elkhorn Slough north of Salinas. Any/all of those would be best seen from the Parlor car or the Lounge. Other than that there's nothing particularly 'scenic' on day 1 and your...

    No PPC on #14 tomorrow

14(07) has parlor. 11(06) inbound to LA with no parlor. Apparently 11(05) or possibly 11(04) drug a couple bad ordered parlors back into LA. Anybody seen a synopsis as to why there have been so many failures since the rebuilds?
